Marshmallows, get ready, because Veronica Mars is coming back for a limited 8-episode run on Hulu, and they have just announced the premiere date – July 26th. Along with the announcement, Hulu also released a teaser showing the titular character getting ready for spring break in Neptune. And, of course, she is packing her purse with a camera and a taser.
After three seasons on UPN (turned CW) from 2004 to 2007 and a crowdfunded movie in 2014, the show is returning this summer, and star Kristen Bell will be back as the “superhero without a cape.” Bell told her Instagram fans in September 2018 that the new limited series was officially a go.
The logline for the revival says that someone is murdering spring breakers in Neptune and affecting tourism, which is the lifeblood of the town. When the parents of one of the victims hire Mars Investigations to find the killer, Veronica begins an epic mystery that “pits the enclave’s wealthy elites, who would rather put an end to the month-long bacchanalia, against a working class that relies on the cash influx that comes with being the West Coast’s answer to Daytona Beach.”
According to Us Weekly, some fans noticed that the description of the limited series was similar to creator Rob Thomas’ 2014 Veronica Mars book The Thousand Dollar Tan Line. But, the executive producer made it clear that the stories are not the same, they just both happen during spring break. He added that the new series takes place five years after the movie.
Thomas also told fans that the Hulu series isn’t going to be nostalgic like the movie, and instead will be “hardcore SoCal noir” that is one big case.
Jason Dohring will be reprising his role as Logan Echolls, and other returning characters include Percy Daggs III (Wallace Fennel), Enrico Colantoni (Keith Mars), Francis Capra (Eli “Weevil” Navarro), Ryan Hansen (Dick Casablancas), Max Greenfield (Leo D’Amato) and David Starzyk (Richard Casablancas).
There will also be some new faces in the cast, including Oscar winner J.K. Simmons, who play an ex-con working for Big Dick Casablanca, and Patton Oswalt as a pizza delivery man who is also a true crime fanatic.
NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is also part of the writers’ room, along with show veteran Diane Ruggiero.
Bell revealed last November that the name of the first episode is “Spring Break Forever” by sharing a pic on Instagram of her script.
To get fans ready for Season 4 of Veronica Mars, Hulu has acquired the rights to the first three seasons and the movie, which will be available for streaming before Season 4 premieres in July.
